The Technology - Turbo Functional Imaging in REal-time (TurboFIRE)

TurboFIRE (Turbo Functional Imaging in REal-time) is cutting-edge neuroimaging technology for real-time online fMRI analysis. TurboFIRE is fast, efficient, and packed with features for advanced brain imaging research. It is compatible with highly accelerated multi-echo fMRI acquisition methods with temporal resolution as short as 100 ms. It is user-friendly, features a wide range of powerful signal and image processing options to maximize sensitivity and specificity for task-based and resting-state fMRI. 

It has been developed for the following applications: 

  • Presurgical and intra-operative task-based and resting-state mapping of eloquent cortex in patients with brain tumors, epilepsy and deep brain stimulation. 
  • Neuroscience research studies of cognition and emotions, and to apply neurofeedback based on task-activation and resting-state connectivity.  

The technology is for research-use-only.

Operating system: Ubuntu 24.04 - fully patched (other operating systems upon request). 


High-speed data transfer interface have been developed for: 

  1. Siemens MR scanner operating systems VB15, VB17, VE11C, VE11E, VE12U, XA30 and XA60  (other operating systems upon request) 
  2. Philips MRI scanner using the XTC Data Dumper.
  3. Other MRI manufacturers upon request.


A high-performance workstation with TurboFIRE installed is available upon request. The workstation complies with Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs)

Detect motion artifacts, task non-compliance, and scan quality issues before your subject leaves the scanner:


  1. Online monitoring and correction of rigid body motion (6 translation and rotation parameters and their derivatives)
  2. Mapping of signal changes due to non-rigid body movement


Monitoring of subject compliance:

  1. Mapping of task-based activation in reference to paradigm
  2. Mapping of default mode resting-state connectivity

  1. Multi-echo echo preprocessing (exponential fitting (T2* and S0) and weighted echo averaging)
  2. Preprocessing of multi-echo acquisition with interleaved shimming
